A Hidden Shaft
Jerusalem of the Middle Bronze Age in Archaeological Finds
A reconstruction, according to Dr. Eyal Meiron, of Jerusalem’s spring fortress (illustration: Shalom Kveller). The fortress, which was uncovered by Prof. Ronny Reich and Eli Shukron on the eastern slope of the City of David, surrounded the Gihon Spring that was the source of water and life for the city, and protected it from enemies. A hidden underground passage – the Warren’s Shaft tunnel – led to the fortress, allowing the city’s inhabitants access to the water in times of siege.
