Jerusalem, City of Palaces

During the Umayyad period the Muslim government center was built near the Temple Mount, including four palaces, which were later destroyed, apparently in an earthquake. The palaces were forgotten until discovered by chance by Israeli archaeologists during the excavations by Prof. Benjamin Mazar’s expedition at the foot of the Temple Mount.
