The Tombstone of Uzziah – the King who was not Buried with his Forefathers

In the picture: The burial plaque of King Uzziah, who was king of Judah in the eighth century BCE, who fortified Jerusalem’s walls. At the end of his life, he fell ill with leprosy and therefore he could not be buried in the tombs of the house of David in the City of David. In the nineteenth century a tombstone was discovered that is dated to the time of the Second Temple, written in Aramaic but in Hebrew letters. The tombstone, which was apparently found in the Mount of Olives, says that Uzziah’s bones were moved to a new burial place.
