The Pilgrimage Road from the Pool of Shiloah to the Temple Mount

In the picture: In excavations over the past few years conducted by a number of scholars, among them Prof. Ronny Reich, Eli Shukron, Nahshon Szanton and Dr. Joe Uziel, portions of a street were found. The street led pilgrims from the Pool of Shiloah toward the Temple Mount at the end of the Second Temple period.

It was initially dated to the time of Herod, but the excavations revealed that it was built later, and should be attributed to the 30s or 40s of the first century CE, about two generations after the time of Herod the Great. It may have been built at the time of King Agrippa or earlier, during the time of the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. Shops were found along the street that served the inhabitants of the city and the pilgrims on their way to the Temple.
