The Bar Kokhba Revolt
In the picture: the Bar Kokhba Revolt apparently broke out in response to the re-establishment of Jerusalem as a pagan city. The silver coin minted by the Bar Kokhba rebels bears the name of the leader, “Simeon” (Bar Kokhba), surrounding the image of the Temple façade.
The coin’s reverse features the bundled Four Species of Sukkot, and in the background, the shadowy image of the emperor’s head can be seen. This shows that the coin was originally Roman, and was overstruck by the rebels with their own symbols.
