The windmill in Mishkenot She’ananim, the first neighborhood outside the Old City walls, provided a livelihood to its residents. In the years that followed dozens of Jewish neighborhoods were founded outside the walls. Christian compounds and a few Muslim neighborhoods were also built, which together created the core of new Jerusalem.
